It is said that animals with much lesser intelligence than ourselves (that is to say all animals) are always in the ‘now’, always in the present, because they lack the over developed prefrontal cortex of the brain that we humans have which enables us to keep thinking about the future, and write dystopian science fiction novels.
How ironic is it that Zen masters practice and struggle for years to attain the same state of mind, that simpler animals are already in!
An amusing thought : if we genetically enhance the intelligence of a dog, and teach it to speak English, it can teach us how to quieten our mind.

We can name the dog ‘Dalai Dogma’, as I’m sure it will be a practising Buddhist, and let an old dog teach us a few new tricks.
